The Science Behind the Play: What Research Says about How Children Really Learn

Walk into the museum on any given day and you'll see kids sending balls swirling through Amazing Airways, negotiating turns at the Kidsteam hand car, or losing track of time entirely in the toddler area. To a casual observer, it looks like fun — and it is. But underneath that fun is something researchers have spent decades studying closely: play isn't a break from learning. For young children, it's the primary mechanism through which learning happens.

What the research actually says

In 2018, the American Academy of Pediatrics published a landmark clinical report, "The Power of Play: A Pediatric Role in Enhancing Development in Young Children," in the journal Pediatrics. The report made a case that's now widely accepted in child development circles: play is not optional or extracurricular to healthy development — it is essential to it. The AAP's report ties play directly to executive function, language development, social-emotional skills, and even the strength of the parent-child relationship, and it specifically calls on pediatricians to advocate for and even "prescribe" play, given how much is at stake developmentally when it's squeezed out of a child's day.

Around the same time, researchers Jennifer Zosh, Brenna Hassinger-Das, and colleagues published influential work (including a 2018 paper in Frontiers in Psychology, in partnership with the LEGO Foundation) reframing how we think about play itself. Rather than treating "free play" and "structured instruction" as opposites, their research describes a spectrum, with purely child-directed free play on one end and adult-directed instruction on the other, and something in between called guided play, where an adult sets up an inviting environment or gently follows a child's lead, without taking over. Their findings suggest that guided play, done well, can be just as effective for learning as direct instruction, while preserving the joy, autonomy, and intrinsic motivation that make play so powerful in the first place.

Why this matters for how we design the museum

This research shapes almost every decision we make about our exhibits. It's why nothing here is look-but-don't-touch. It's why our exhibits are built to be handled, climbed on, and taken apart, and why our staff are trained to follow a child's curiosity rather than direct it. When a child spends fifteen minutes figuring out how airflow moves a ball through a maze, they're doing real scientific reasoning: forming a hypothesis, testing it, adjusting, and trying again. When two children negotiate who goes first on the hand car, they're practicing the same executive function and social skills that will serve them in a classroom, a friendship, and eventually a workplace.

A few things this means for families

You don't need a museum to put this research into practice at home. A few takeaways worth holding onto: resist the urge to over-direct play, even when adult instruction feels more "productive" in the moment; look for opportunities to guide gently rather than instruct outright, like joining a pretend game in a supporting role instead of taking it over; and remember that a child deeply absorbed in play, even something as simple as stacking cups or sorting rocks, is not wasting time. They're building the exact cognitive and social foundations that will carry them through school and beyond.

Our takeaway

None of this is new to anyone who has watched a child play closely. But it's reassuring to know that the instinct many parents and educators already have, that play matters, holds up under real scientific scrutiny. At Northeast Texas Children's Museum, that's the whole reason we exist: to give kids a space built entirely around what the research already tells us works.
